Project: Sparkle

This huge, two-part project is based on an unusual story made by some folks at Starmen.Net. The two parts of the project (along with the Sparkle drawings in the Sketches section) show Camille's ability to draw with and without the aid of the computer. Her art is impressive either way! The first edition was made a few years ago and is mostly done in Photoshop. The second edition of drawings are (obviously) based much more on the original sketches.

Each thumbnail links to a high-res drawing. On the left is first edition and on the right is second edition.

Itoi #1
Itoi bears samurai armor which Camille actually researched for quite some time before she even started the initial sketching. In real life, the armor is incredibly complicated and is made of cloth, metal, and bamboo. Bamboo is strong, lightweight, and allows the wearer to move easily for quick hand to hand combat. Shigesato Itoi is the brilliant mind behind the EarthBound series of video games. In the second drawing, Itoi seems to have aged, but as we all know, the power of a true samurai warrior increases with wisdom, not strength. Wax on, wax off.

Megamoto #1

Megamoto is definitely an embellished character, as the man he is based on (Shigeru Miyamoto) is gentle and highly intelligent. However, that doesn't make for good story-telling, so in the fanfic he is a shrewd man with robotic armor and a magic potion which turns him into a Shredder-like beast. Megamoto's armor was a first for Camille, as she had never previously drawn anything that resembled a robot. She referred a lot to the art from the video game Megaman for inspiration here.

EBounding #1

EBounding is a young hippie whose powerfully good looks are enough by themselves to give him super powers. Who needs magical transformations when you can freak your foes out with your groovy pants? Camille claims that the hippie was the most fun to draw, except for the beard, which frustrated her for hours as she tried to make it look just right. She even had her brother pose in flip flops so she could draw his feet. Later she made a clay action figure of this picture for an art class called "Smackdown Syd".

reidman #1

reidman is one of Camille's favorite pictures because it shows the most character. The first character was originally frowning, was missing sunglasses, and wearing metal gloves (which were mistaken for mummy hands). reidman is shown in both of these pictures in his super-powered state, in which he is beefier and dons steel-toed boots. In the final picture he can be seen busting out a super-cool Superman shirt. 'Samurai-karate-kick-mind-power-reidman is preparing for battle!'

Tomato #1

Tomato takes off on his own adventure of sorts in which he battles the nefarious Itoi, only to find out that he has battled and defeated a robot. Camille asked Tomato what he wanted his character to look like and the only description he gave was 'a mohawk, a sword, and some gold chains like Mr. T'. It was also his idea to draw the Mr. Sparkle characters in an anime style. Camille did a bit of research, but as this was her first time drawing in that particular style, the characters turned out a little more cartoony than anime.

Ultimoo #1

Ultimoo was definitely the one character who changed the most from the first iteration to the second. However, he still retains his cool boots and light-saber-like sword. In the story, Ultimoo is fairly calm and collected until the N-Cronies mess with his bathrobe. Camille wasn't quite sure how to approach this character, so she stuck with the original idea from J.J. McCullough, which was to give him an evil expression and a look similar to that of the insidious Darth Maul.
