Planet Walk is a project Camille completed for Pima Community College in Tucson, AZ. The process of creating the disks is an interesting one. The first and most obvious step is that the disk must be made out of clay, designed carefully, and with painstaking attention to detail. Then, the wax disk is taken to a foundry, where molds are taken of the pieces. This is done so that more may be cast in the future if needed.
After the mold is used to make a wax casting, the piece is then invested in a silica sand solution to form a hard layer around the wax. It is heated, the wax melts away, and the molten bronze is poured in. To finish the piece, a patina is applied to bring out the texture and to add color. Patinas change the color of the bronze chemically. Every year or so, the finished bronze requires buffing to maintain the surface quality. Desert Crucible Inc. did an excellent job bronzing them.

These disks are set in cement at the college as a display to show the relative distances between planets on a scale spanning 500 feet. Below, you have the pleasure of seeing Camille's finished bronzes.
